Boomer Wealth Coach Ted Wernham offers his analysis of the London leadership debate

Boomer Wealth Coach Ted Wernham offers his analysis of the London leadership debate

Dear Conservative Friends:

Between 250 and 300 people were present, despite a very significant shortage of parking and a reluctance to come onto campus.

Two hopefuls (Elliot and Hudak) mentioned how proud they were to be graduates of Western, as did the moderator, and the MC. While I to am a graduate, be assured that the crowd was not enamored or influenced by the flag-waving. It does not seem to me to be a significant requirement to be considered when voting for our next Leader.

Reasonable attendance by the media, but we have to wait to see how they report.

Elliott supporters, mostly youth. Hon. Jim Flaherty was in attendance. Heavy presence on the Elliott team by long term Tory strategists, including Mark Spiro, Jamie Watt, and others. Her only mis statement was the comment "leave no person behind" which everyone immediately thought of Jack Layton and the NDP. Otherwise her presentation was a "developed from the top" overview of what she hoped to do, if chosen. Claims to have a day by day, week by week plan to lead the Conservatives to power. On a few of the points, I had to ask "where did that come from". If the plan is already in place and all we have to do to achieve it is to vote for her, then I would encourage everyone to make very certain that they know what the plan is

Randy Hillier had few supporters and will finish fourth.

Tim Hudak was a disappointment. His delivery, and stage mannerisms were way too American politician! (with apologies to american politicians... Ontario politics is not the place to parrot republican rhetoric.... at least make it Canadian, eh!) plastic promises and delivery. He made promises that will break down under scrutiny. For example, he suggested every newborn in the province should receive $1000 to be invested for their future education. There are so many legal and estate planning problems arising from that, not to mention the tax problems, that the proposal is a no go from the start. He made other pronouncements and predicaments solvers that sounded good but won't work. Again, it seems that he has all of the problems solved, and we will be the beneficiaries of that salvation if we just vote for him. Sorry Tim, there are too many boomers living with broken promises. and lay off the repetitive references to the middle class.....they are hard to find and hard to define, anymore.

Frank Klees was professional, courteous, specific and spontaneous. He made a minor mistake on a date early in his delivery, but corrected it later in the program. He speaks about grassroots involvement. That resonates with a voter base, who wonder how faith-based funding became a platform issue before it was even embraced by the membership. Frank is experienced. He sounds experienced. Conservatives in the province want to say in what a conservative is, who the conservative leader should be and how a conservative government should operate. Frank specifically mentioned the inclusion of new Canadians into the policymaking process, a platform that no doubt will appeal to/resonate with an electorate that is educated and emerging.

Franks support base was the most solid, in my opinion. The Hudak supporters must be disappointed with their candidate this evening.

As is often the case in politics, votes are not necessarily cast in support, they are withheld in protest. Here's an example.

As you are aware, I received a call from one of Hudaks front people last Thursday just before the board of control debate. The content was to set up a meeting this afternoon with Hudak, and some of the local party members. I was told that someone would be back to us before the meeting this evening. No call came in. Maybe too busy, but should never be too busy to call to say they're too busy. We had some issues to discuss with Tim, but he should be pursuing us, not us him.

Tonight, Frank Klees spoke well, appeared well, and pronounced well on the policies so as not to lose one supporter, and no doubt became a credible alternative that will draw votes from the other three campaigns. Allow me to suggest that many undecideds tonight had to be impressed with Frank.

It was encouraging to hear from a person humble enough, smart enough, and experienced enough to know how to lead, where to lead, and what issues to lead with, the reward for which will be enough to sustain the party to power in the next election.

All of which is humbly offered for your serious consideration

FRANK KLEES ARGUES AGAINST “HST” TAX GRAB

LABELS McGUINTY’S PLAN AN OVERBURDEN TO ONTARIANS

QUEEN’S PARK -Frank Klees (MPP Aurora-Newmarket) today rebuked Dalton McGuinty during Question Period for his backdoor scheme to take more tax money from hard-working Ontarians during the worst recession in decades.

“This is the wrong thing to do at the wrong time,” said Frank Klees of the Liberals’ proposed harmonization sales tax (HST) plan. “How are those on fixed incomes and the unemployed going to cope? Will the Premier at least familiarize himself on the impact of his HST?”

With the proposed plan, the McGuinty Liberals will add more tax to services previously exempt from provincial sales tax, like gasoline and home heating fuel that will increase in price by 8 per cent.

Klees stated that McGuinty, “chose not to listen. In the face of all of the evidence and all of the pain that it will cause families and businesses … will he agree to stop this nonsense?” To watch Frank Klees today in Question Period, visit www.frank-klees.on.ca

The domino effect of the tax will cause serious setbacks in economic prosperity and job creation for the province. In order to administer the HST, businesses will incur substantial costs. Consumers will have less to spend on necessities.

Frank Klees, a candidate for Progressive Conservative leadership, was the first to speak out against the HST, even before the McGuinty Liberals introduced it. A recent survey says that seven out of ten Ontarians are also against the HST.

Ontario Needs An Economic Strategy

Ontario has been hemorrhaging jobs for the past year – we need an economic strategy to preserve and create jobs now.

Frank Klees advocated for the creation of a Select Committee of the Ontario Legislature that would have served as a basis for a plan to get the province into economic recovery. Premier McGuinty ignored Frank’s proposal and now the Premier is paying the price.

Not only has the government been unable to turn Ontario’s economy around, the government has embraced NDP-style tax and spend policies to spend our way out of recession and create jobs. The establishment of a non-partisan Select Committee last fall could have helped steer the Ontario economy out of the worst depths it is now experiencing.

Stop The HST

In a recession, the McGuinty government has mandated that more products and services should be taxed. With the implementation of the HST, the McGuinty government has demonstrated its addiction to taxing and spending. Unlike other provinces that implemented harmonized sales taxes, the McGuinty government is not reducing the provincial component. This punishes already-suffering industries such as the housing sector and the financial services sector. Ontarians don’t need any more deterrents from economic prosperity and job creation.

Reduce the HST’s Negative Side Effects

At a time when Ontario’s businesses don’t need anymore costs to do business, Ontario business will incur substantial costs to administer the HST. Once it’s implemented, the HST will be difficult to undo; however, the negative side-effects of the HST will still be felt. This is why Frank Klees proposes to reduce the HST to overturn the significant tax burden imposed by McGuinty.

Ontario Needs To Be Business-Friendly

Throughout the McGuinty government’s tenure, it has made life more difficult for the operation of a business. They have increased corporate taxes (making Ontario’s corporate tax rate among the highest in North America) – not to mention forcing businesses to pay a higher minimum wage in a time of economic crisis.
Frank Klees proposes to reduce business taxes and to create tax incentive zones to attract new industries and create jobs.

Let Business Lead The Way:
Tax Incentives For Manufacturing

Manufacturers in Ontario have not felt economic conditions like today since the early 1990s, if not the 1930s. To provide incentives for manufacturers to hire new staff, Frank Klees proposes a tax credit against corporate income tax to be paid. This means that if a manufacturer hires new employees, it will receive a tax credit for contributing positively to our economy. If the company is not profitable (and not paying income tax), the tax credit will be available to be carried forward until the company is profitable.

Youth Get Head Start

Following graduation from school, the toughest jobs for any student are finding secure, long-term employment and paying off debt. To encourage youth to pursue post-secondary education and help pay off educational debts, Frank Klees proposes a 4-year Ontario income tax holiday following graduation. For those who complete a university, college or registered trades program, they will not have to pay any income tax on income earned for four years after graduation.

Frank Klees has a plan for creating opportunity for all Ontarians. See Frank Klees’ website to learn more about his proposals for creating an economic recovery and opportunity for all.

Klees signs up most members...close race for Ontario PC Leader

Klees signs up most members...close race for Ontario PC Leader

Update: Yesterday’s Globe & Mail article went on to say, “Party insiders and his opponents said Mr. Hudak in fact recruited only about 7,000, compared with roughly 8,000 for Ms. Elliott and 9,800 for Mr. Klees.”

I think we are in a real race right now with no clear front-runner. Coronations are a thing of the past. PC party members are independent by nature, and they will make up their minds on who will be the best leader and who has the best chances of winning in the next Ontario election. I believe Frank Klees has the best experience to lead our party and become Premier in 2011.

Overall this close race will be good for the party and in the long run make us stronger because of it. I think it is a good sign for renewal and the grassroots policy process as well. Congratulations to all the campaigns for together getting the party up to 40,000 memberships in total. Thank you Team Klees for all of the efforts that resulted in having Frank Klees declared the leader in membership sales.

Ontario Tory leadership campaign now a neck-and-neck horse race
Hudak drops out of front-runner spot into a three-way contest, opponents say

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

TORONTO — Ontario Progressive Conservative leadership hopeful Tim Hudak is trailing two of his rivals in the number of people persuaded to join the party, suggesting he is no longer the front-runner in the race, his opponents say.

Mr. Hudak, 41, is competing against three of his colleagues in the Ontario Progressive Conservative caucus to become leader. But to the surprise of many in the party, Frank Klees signed up the most new members by last Thursday's deadline. He was followed by Christine Elliott, Mr. Hudak and Randy Hillier, party insiders say.

Mr. Hudak had been the declared front-runner since the leadership campaign began in March. But party insiders now expect he will be in a three-way race with Mr. Klees and Ms. Elliott. It is widely assumed that Mr. Hillier will be last on the first ballot at the leadership vote on June 27.
"It's a horse race now," John Capobianco, Mr. Klees's campaign chairman, said yesterday.
"The game has all changed completely," a party insider added. "Any one of the three can win it now, but [Mr. Hudak's] got the uphill battle at this point."

Jeremy Adams, communications chairman of Mr. Hudak's campaign, declined to comment yesterday on how many members Mr. Hudak signed up. He also declined to comment on an e-mail sent from Mr. Hudak's campaign headquarters last Friday night that boasted of bringing in 14,000 new members. Party insiders and his opponents said Mr. Hudak in fact recruited only about 7,000, compared with roughly 8,000 for Ms. Elliott and 9,800 for Mr. Klees.

"We're extremely happy with where the campaign is at right now," Mr. Adams said. Mr. Hudak has the most support of any candidate from his own caucus, federal Tory cabinet ministers and presidents of riding associations, he said. "There's a lot of momentum for Tim and there's a lot of support for Tim in all corners of the province."

The Progressive Conservative Party had only about 8,500 members when John Tory stepped down as leader in March. Its ranks have grown to about 40,000 since the membership drive.

Ms. Elliott appears to be the clear winner on the donations front. According to Elections Ontario, she has raised $315,100 so far - all contributions exceeding $100 must be reported to Elections Ontario. "This is hands-on proof that this is a competitive race," said Catherine Pringle, a spokeswoman for Ms. Elliott. "We are extremely encouraged by the generosity of our donors."
Mr. Hudak has raised $154,940 in political donations, according to Elections Ontario. Mr. Hillier has raised $91,800 and Mr. Klees is in last place, with $62,600.

Frank Klees' official position on the Human Rights Commission

Human Rights Commission

The Human Rights commission is not working as intended. It needs to be fixed, not annihilated. People need access to a system that will help them against wrongs without having to enter into our expensive legal system.

But the abuses must stop. Section 13 needs to be repealed. Giving the Commission the right to investigate the views and opinions of the citizens of Ontario threatens the freedom of expression and is counter to the importance of that right in Canadian society. Freedom of expression is a core value of democracy from which all other rights naturally flow. Without that, our democratic system of government itself is at risk.

The message that needs to be sent is clear - the PC Party of Ontario is inclusive, not reactionary, and the Human Rights Commission needs to be refocused on it original mandate.

Frank Klees editorial board interview with the National Post

Frank Klees editorial board interview with the National Post

Frank revealed some policy in his interview with the National Post editorial board. I especially like the idea about new graduates not having to pay provincial taxes for the first four years. Having gone to University and now having a student debt, this policy would have allowed me to pay down my debt faster. The result would have been the opportunity to spend at this point and contribute more to the economic recovery by purchasing a house, car or other goods and services. Every current university student should be in support of this policy. I can tell you first hand this policy is a big deal and will make a difference for you.

Klees wants grassroots to help develop policy

'Arrogant' Leaders
James Cowan, National Post Published: Friday, May 15, 2009 Peter J. Thompson, National Post Frank Klees says as PC leader he would fight the harmonized sales tax plan.

Ontario's Progressive Conservatives should abandon their top-down system of policy development and instead build their next election platform in consultation with rank-and-file members, says Frank Klees, a candidate for leadership of the party.

Mr. Klees said he is not "devoid of ideas," but that official policy should come from the party's grassroots -- not its leader.

"When it comes to policy issues, I have ideas that I want the party to consider and to develop with me, but I am not pronouncing those policies as a fait accompli because I think that is offensive," he told the National Post's editorial board.

A Cabinet minister under former Ontario premiers Mike Harris and Ernie Eves, Mr. Klees said his party's leadership became "arrogant" after it won the 1995 provincial election and stopped conferring with supporters on policy issues.

He said that in order to win the 2011 provincial election, the party must reinvigorate its policy advisory council, which would allow average voters to have input on the platform.

"This isn't just a matter of a few people sitting around a coffee table and saying 'Because I feel this, this is what I want to do,' " Mr. Klees said. "This is a matter of saying what makes good sense, what makes good political sense and what is practical."

It has been widely reported that the Common Sense Revolution, the campaign document that helped Mr. Harris claim power in 1995, was developed by a small circle of Conservative strategists, including Tony Clement, Tom Long and Leslie Noble. But Mr. Klees said that notion is an "urban myth," and that the Common Sense Revolution was actually crafted through extensive consultation with the party members.

Among the ideas that Mr. Klees said he intends to present to party members are improvements to the province's transportation infrastructure and making university graduates exempt from paying provincial income taxes for the first four years after leaving school.

Mr. Klees also vowed to fight a plan by Dalton McGuinty, the Liberal Premier, to blend the provincial sales tax with the federal GST, creating a single harmonized sales tax (HST), arguing Ontario is able to pursue the harmonization only because of $4.3-billion in funding from the federal government. He wryly noted that Christine Elliott, another leadership candidate, could lobby her husband, Jim Flaherty, the federal Finance Minister, to withdraw the funding.

He said Ms. Elliott's own proposal to impose a flat 8% income tax in the province was equally ill-timed.

"This is not the time to look at a major overhaul of our taxation system," Mr. Klees said. "We want to attract investment here and a tax system in flux is not something that sends a message of stability in this province."

Inappropriate for OPCCA to endorse a candidate in PC Leadership Race

Inappropriate for OPCCA to endorse a candidate in PC Leadership Race

From http://www.campuspc.ca/about_us.html

With students moving from riding to riding for school and work terms, their campus club can become the best way for them to maintain a connection to the Ontario PC Party. The Ontario Campus PCs is the organization that helps all of these clubs run by providing them with materials, speakers, and other assistance.

We organize specials events across the province ranging from catching a taping of the Royal Canadian Air Farce, which we did last November, meeting with MPPs and other special guests, Ontario Model Parliament, and just going for dinner and / or drinks with fellow PC Youth.

Joining also gives you a lot of say within the Ontario PC Party and the ability to participate in things such as developing its policies and election platforms. Many of the Campus PC clubs are joint clubs with the Conservative Party of Canada and joining OPCCA will also allow you to get more involved at the federal level if you wish to do so.

Whether you are a committed Progressive Conservative or just curious about politics, the Ontario Campus PCs is a great place for you and a great place to meet like minded people.

On May 3, the executive of the Ontario PC Campus Association decided to speak on behalf of every single one of their members by endorsing a candidate in this race. I think the decision was highly inappropriate and goes directly against the mandate of the organization. To me this is not about them endorsing Tim Hudak. Tim is a strong candidate who has appealed to many young Conservatives in this race.

My issue is that how can this organization now be seen as credible or neutral? If Christine Elliott, Randy Hillier or Frank Klees want to speak to a campus in Ontario, why would they go through the OPCCA when it has already declared a bias? Will they look to a friendly student individual student or simply go through one of the Profs? My fear is that other candidates will be less likely to deal with the OPCCA because of this endorsement and as a result their membership will be at a disadvantage because potentially they will not hear from all candidates in an equal and fair manner. As a result they have failed with their mandate.

I would also be curious to know what gives the executive the right to speak for everyone. What kind of polling could they produce to justify this endorsement? How many University or College clubs support this resolution? If the University of Windsor PC campus club for example was to back a different candidate what would it mean for the parent organization? Could individual clubs endorse their own candidate? This will cause a mess and will likely cause more harm to the OPCCA than help to the Hudak campaign.

The OPCCA has a mandate to promote our party and ideas to University and College campuses in Ontario. They should promote all candidates, our policies and ensure students get engaged in the leadership race. They should resist pressure from all candidates to take a position.

At this point, I don' think there is any point retracting the endorsement and I don't have a problem with Tim accepting it. Having said that, I think the OPCCA did their membership a disservice with this endorsement and I hope it does not result in students at various campuses having less of an opportunity to hear from all candidates.

I bring attention to an open letter to members of the OPCYA written by Brayden Akers that I think is the appropriate way for an organization affiliated with the Ontario PC Party to handle this leadership race. I hope the OPCYA takes this letter seriously and avoids making the same mistake that OPCCA made by expressing a bias in this race to the detriment of their organization.

OPCCA Endorses Tim Hudak for Leader of the Ontario PC Party

FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION May 3, 2009

OPCCA ENDORSES TIM HUDAK FOR ONTARIO PC PARTY LEADER

OTTAWA, ON- At its last executive meeting on May 2nd, the Ontario PC Campus Association (OPCCA) endorsed Tim Hudak to be the next leader of the PC Party of Ontario.

While there are several notable candidates in the field, OPCCA believes that Tim Hudak is best positioned to provide unifying and dynamic leadership for the Ontario PC party, in order to be ready to fight Dalton McGuinty in the 2011 election.

“I am pleased to announce that OPCCA is endorsing Tim Hudak to be the next leader of our party. Tim Hudak, more than any other candidate, has reached out to the youth of the party in support of our organization and its initiatives.” said Eric Merkley, OPCCA President.

OPCCA also strongly believes in Tim Hudak’s vision for the party; to provide strong and principled small “c” conservatism as a clear alternative to McGuinty’s Liberals. Our party is at its best when it speaks to the hopes and aspirations of middle class families in Ontario, and OPCCA considers Tim Hudak as the best candidate to unite the Ontario PC party behind these shared values.

“Without a doubt, Tim Hudak is the best candidate suited to unite our party against Dalton McGuinty with a solid conservative vision.” added President Merkley. “Tim’s campaign is also on the forefront of online innovation, showing that he understands how to reach out to the next generation, which is essential for the long-term strength of our party.”

To learn more about Tim Hudak, visit www.timhudak.ca

************

Open letter to the OPCYA from President Brayden Akers

Due to the recent amount of emails and phone calls I have received about the Ontario PC Campus Association’s decision to endorse a leadership candidate and enquiring if the Ontario PC Youth Association will be taking a similar route and also endorsing a leadership candidate, there is a need to communicate with you, the members of the Ontario PC Youth Association, my current position on this issue.

At our next executive meeting, I will be discouraging the Ontario PC Youth Association Executive from endorsing any candidate for the Leadership of the Ontario PC Party. I have decided to take this stand for a variety of reasons, despite the obvious pressures on me and members organization’s executive.

I will remind the Ontario PC Youth Association’s Executive not to pretend or attempt to speak on behalf of its membership (which includes Members of its subsidiary organization, the Ontario PC Campus Association) due to the variety of opinions on this issue and the impossibility of unanimous position among the membership. I will also remind my executive the importance of this process to remain fair and democratic, and we as an executive should not dictate to our membership for whom they should vote for.

I also recognize the responsibility of all Associations of the Party (Ontario PC Youth Association, Ontario PC Business Club, Ontario PC Women’s Association and Ontario PC Campus Association) to work with whoever becomes leader of the PC Party of Ontario. Compromising our relationship with the next leader would be irresponsible to our membership.

I encourage all Young Progressive Conservatives of Ontario to become involved in any leadership campaign and this important process that will determine the future direction of our party. I have also encouraged all members of my executive to become involved in any leadership campaign and endorse leadership candidates as individuals.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Brayden Akers
